d. August 19, 2010

ATHENS - Alice R. Curtis, passed away, at home surrounded by family, August 19, 2010. She was born August 17, 1932 to the late Rev. Lewis and Mrs. Elsie Tabler Butcher.
Alice Curtis spent the majority of her adult life working to better the lives of the residents of ATHENS county, Ohio, particularly the lives of senior citizens. Alice was one of the original members of the Area Agency on Aging Advisory Council which through her valuable input became and continues to be an effective voice and advocate for the elderly residents of Southeastern Ohio.
Alice was very aware or the needs of the elderly and through her efforts assisted in the formation of the Housing for ATHENS -enior Residents (HASR) organization which facilitated the funding and construction of a forty-five apartment housing complex (Heritage Commons Apartments) to serve the elderly in ATHENS county. Her sincere interest in meeting the housing needs of the elderly continued as she assumed the management responsibilities of two, new additional elderly housing complexes (Sheltering Arms Apartments and Beasley Mill Apartments) in Athens. Through her efforts these two housing projects were rented-up and maintained. She continued the overall management of all three housing complexes (a total of 107 apartment units) for a period of three years. After that period Alice turned Sheltering Arms and Beasley Mill over to others, who she helped train, to manage so that she could concentrate her efforts on Heritage Commons and the Retired Senior Volunteer Program (RSVP).
Alice actively participated in numerous training activities in order to better prepare herself to provide the best possible services of ATHENS county. Her experience and knowledge were great assets to the development of new personnel entering the housing management field. Alice was certified by the U.S Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) to interpret residency regulations and to manage HUD subsidized elderly housing projects.
Alice Curtis' positive influence on the betterment of the lives of the elderly residents of Southeastern Ohio will be felt for many future generations. Alice is survived by her four children, Herbert "Butch& (Dorothy) of Canal Winchester, Clarence (Becky) of Athens, Steve of Athens, and Rosetta (Jim) Miller of Columbus.  Alice adored her 10 grandchildren and most recently she enjoyed one great grandson.
