THE Plains – Verna Sue Bickley Hughes, 75 of The Plains, passed away surrounded by her family, Tuesday, June 7, 2016 at The Laurels of Athens after a short, but courageous battle with cancer. Born September 18, 1940 in Athens County, she was the daughter of the late Sarah Bickley Stanley. She was a 1958 graduate of Athens High School and attended Ohio University for a short time. She was formerly employed by Foster’s Dress Shop, The Athens Messenger and retired from The Athens City School System in Food Service with over 20 years of service. Verna was a loving and devoted wife of 55 years to Larry W. Hughes; and supportive mother of Diana (Nicky) Prince of Brandon, Mississippi and David (Rhonda) Hughes of Athens. She will be terribly missed by her adoring grandsons, Cody and Chase Prince, also of Brandon, Mississippi. She is also survived by her four cousins, George (Barb) and Danny (Mary) Hite, Gary (Judy) Bickley and Susie (Dan) Baur; stepbrothers, Bill (Norma) Stanley and Ronnie (Trudy) Stanley; and very special friends, Linda (David) McAllister, Joyce (Bob) Dailey and Irene (Emory) Dishong. Besides her mother, Verna was preceded in death by her stepfather, Bernard Stanley; her mother-in-law and father-in-law, Margaret and William Hughes; and her special aunts and uncles, Ruth and Bob Hite and Hap and Mary Bickley. Verna loved her family and friends and enjoyed spending her winters in Florida where she made numerous friends. She was a very very devoted and enthusiastic Ohio State and Cincinnati Reds Fan. No calling hours will be observed. A celebration of Life will be Saturday, July 9, 2016 at The Plains United Methodist Church with Rev. Doug Flinn officiating.
