Chauncey - Charles Robert Matheny, 80, of Chauncey, died Friday, January 9, 2026 at Fairfield Medical Center in Lancaster, Ohio.
Born June 16, 1945, in Chauncey, Ohio, he was the son of the late Edward Leroy and Beatrice Juanita Rife Matheny. Charles was a 1964 graduate of Chauncey-Dover High School where he was a star athlete who would later be inducted into the Athens High School Hall of Fame. He was an avid outdoorsman who loved to hunt and fish. He was also known to like to have a good time. Charles was a hard worker all of his life and retired from the Athens City School District. He was a member of the Trimble Masonic Lodge 557. If it was an autumn Saturday afternoon in the fall, there was one place to find him, cheering on his Ohio State Buckeyes.
He is survived by his wife of 63 years, Anita O’Nail Matheny; one daughter, Patsy Matheny (Ron Stotridge); two sons, Charles (Teri) Matheny and Dave (Gloria) Matheny; two grandchildren, Brandon and Hailey; one great granddaughter, Hannah; three step grandchildren, Dakota (Janesa) Balch, Brooklyn (Tyler) McIntosh and Chelsie Shifflett; three step great grandchildren, Ryder, Rhett and Amelia and several nieces and nephews.
Besides his parents, he was preceded in death by two brothers, John and Edward Matheny and two sisters, Beatrice Lanning and Madelyn Kish.
Funeral services will be held at 7:00 PM on Wednesday, January 14, 2026 at the Hughes Funeral Home in Athens, Ohio with Gary Alton officiating. A Masonic Service will be conducted by the Trimble Masonic Lodge 557. Visitation will be held on Wednesday from 4:00 - 7:00 PM at the Hughes Funeral Home.
