David “Dave” Coon

David “Dave” Coon, age 70, of The Plains, passed away unexpectedly Tuesday, February 14, 2023.

Dave is survived by his loving wife of 45 years, Debbie Deeter; his daughter, Jodie and son-in-law, Bart Lewis, beloved brothers, Larry (Maureen) Coon, Chris (Lisa) Coon, foster sister Judy (Archie) Stanley, and so many more extended family and friends.

Dave was a 1970 graduate of Athens High School where he excelled in sports. In total he received eight varsity letters; three in football, three in basketball and two in track. He was an all-league fullback selection his junior and senior year, led the team in rushing yards in both 1968 and 1969. When he graduated he held the AHS record for the longest rushing touchdown of 97 yards. Dave also earned All District honors in 1968 and 1969. His senior year he received first team Associated Press honors as a fullback and All State Honorable mention. He was also a standout on the track team and was a member of the 880 Relay Team League Champions. Dave was inducted into the Athens High School Hall of Fame on September 1, 2005.

Dave was employed at AEP Southern Ohio Coal Company Meigs Mine #2 until his retirement in 2003 after 28 years. Dave was honored to be part of the coal mining family. He put his whole heart and soul into his job. He was most proud of being the president of the United Mine Workers of America, Local Union 1886 for over 20 years.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Leslie “Les” and Olga Coon and brother-in-law, Bill Deeter.

A celebration of Dave’s life will be held on Saturday, February 25, 2023 from 11 AM - 1 PM at Hughes-Moquin Funeral Home with stories of Dave’s life being shared at 1PM.
