Donald E. Bennett

    Athens - Donald E. Bennett, 81, of Mush Run Road in Athens, passed away Wednesday, November 1, 2023, surrounded by his family.

     Born February 7, 1942, in Bedford, Ohio, he was the first child and son of the late Donald David and Doris Eloise Finsterwald Bennett.  His early childhood was spent in Maple Heights, Ohio.  He graduated from Shade High School in 1960 where he starred on the basketball team.  Don worked for thirty-four years at the Department of Mental Health in Athens as an LPN and Licensed Stationary Steam Engineer.  His second career was with the U.S. Department of Agriculture Farm Service Agency where he was a Field Reporter and Crop Insurance Adjuster for seventeen years.  He had a true passion for farming, he enjoyed riding his tractor and was an avid hunter.  Don was a member of the Lottridge, Stewart and Athens Senior Clubs.  He was known as a kind and gentle man who would do anything for anyone.  

     He is survived by his wife of 63 years, who was his high school sweetheart, Patricia Cowan Bennett; two daughters, Jackie Bennett-Hanning (Tim) and Ann (Randy) Rohrer; grandson, Travis Rohrer; two brothers (special brother Bud); two sisters; several nieces, nephews and his four legged friend Bindi Jewel.

     Besides his parents, he was preceded in death by two sons, Gregory Don Bennett and Jeffrey Don Bennett.

     Funeral services will be at 1:00 PM on Monday, November 6, 2023, at the Hughes-Moquin Funeral Home in Athens with John Young officiating.  Burial will be at Athens Memory Gardens in Athens.  Visitation will be on Monday from 11:00 AM to 1:00 PM.  In lieu of flowers donations are encouraged to be directed to The Lottridge Senior Citizens Club care of Carl Blake, 2309 Blake Road, Coolville, Ohio 45723.  Friends are encouraged to sign the online guestbook at hughesmoquinfuneralhome.com.
