James E Cooper

ATHENS – James E. Cooper, 83, passed away peacefully on Wednesday, April 30, 2025. He was born on July 24, 1941, to the late Hubert and Esta Jarvis Cooper in Calhoon County, West Virgina.

James graduated from Rome-Cannan High School. A talented baseball player in his youth, he later served in the military with honor. James was an avid outdoorsman who especially enjoyed coon hunting, and he had a deep appreciation for bluegrass music.

He is survived by his son, James “Jimmy” Ernest Cooper Jr.; daughter-in-law, Jennifer Burky Cooper; daughter, Amy Michelle Cooper; and grandchildren, Rhiannon Cooper and Jeremy Cooper.

In addition to his parents, James was preceded in death by his sister, Christina Bartlett; and his spouses, Margaret Boyer-Cooper and Mary Talbert Cooper.

At this time, no funeral service is planned. A memorial service will be announced at a later date. Arrangements are being handled by Hughes Funeral Home.
