James "Herb" Herbert Spears

COOLVILLE—James Herbert Spears (Herb), of Coolville, OH, went to be with the Lord on November 24, 2025, at the age of 83, surrounded by the love of his family. Herb was born on December 12, 1941, in Walker, WV, and as a proud American, he served four years in the United States Army and was a Vietnam War Veteran.

His dedication to his fellow servicemen continued long after his military career, as he was an active member of the Disabled American Veterans, VFW, American Legion, and a faithful member of Carthage Community Church. Herb retired from the West Virginia Division of Highways after 30 years of service. He was known for his strong work ethic, dependability and being a jack-of-all-trades.

Herb is survived by his devoted wife of 59 years, Mary Spears; his sister, June Miller; his three children, son, Trent Spears (Susanne), daughter, Mechelle Shanks (Eric), son Rodney (Jimmy) Spears (Lyn Everett), and five grandchildren – Jessi Beha (Ben), Kacie Arpin (Chris), Seth Spears (Melissa), Kaitlin Engle (Zachary), Kyle Shanks (Kayla) and nine great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his father Fulton, mother Bernice, two brothers, and a sister.

In his free time, Herb enjoyed spending time with his family and cats, tinkering on projects around the house, watching birds from the kitchen window, and hunting on the family farm. He also enjoyed a cup of coffee in the morning and telling stories about his life to anyone who would listen.

We take comfort in knowing he is now home with the Lord and though he is no longer with us, his spirit lives on through the family he devoted his life to.

Graveside services will be held at 11 A.M., on Monday, December 1, 2025, at Mt. Olive Cemetery in Walker, WV, with Pastor Calvin Jarvis officiating and military graveside services will be conducted.
