William R. Moon
Athens - William R. Moon, 56, of Athens, died unexpectedly Wednesday, May 14, 2025 in Athens, OH.
Born October 12, 1968, in Pittsburgh, PA, he was the son of the late Joseph D. Moon III and Mary Christy Moon. He was a 1987 graduate of Seneca Valley High School where he starred on the football team as a fullback and middle linebacker. He then met the love of his life and best friend Deborah Moon-Shaffer and went on to start a family. He held a variety of professional positions including owning Strong Arm Cleaning and multiple
Positions specializing in large and small scale contract custodial work. However, his most rewarding and important role was being home to raise his children whom he loved so much. To many he was known and loved as “Coach Moon” whether it was baseball or football. He never missed a birthday, milestone, special event, or crisis for his family. He was there good or bad. He was a kind and gentle soul in a not so small body. His love to car shop took him to car lots long and far and his love for new shoes left his closet full of boxes of shoes that had to remain in the box until the right moment. He loved to travel and walk to explore new cities with his family. He was giving and forgiving to all who knew him. He loved to fish with his son, watch movies and sports, history documentaries, and especially rerun football. His tv was usually loud enough for all in the vicinity to enjoy what he was watching with him.
He was a fighter. He faced more challenges in his life than most and he faced each challenge with a smile and never complained. He worked hard to protect his loved ones from pain on his account. His family hopes to carry on his legacy and asks you to join by being kind and caring like he was, by giving people second chances and the benefit of the doubt, and by being strong for him and because of him. He is survived by one daughter, Samantha Gregory and his special son in law Luke Gregory; one son, Tyler Moon; two grandchildren, Kennedy and Kamden Gregory; one brother, Joseph D Moon IV; his best friend and true love Deborah Moon-Shaffer and his many four legged companions.
Besides his parents he was preceded in death by his maternal grandfather, William Christy.
The family would like to thank all of the medical professionals that helped through his years of health challenges and the staff and drivers at Greencab, especially Frank, for the genuine kindness and friendship that they showed him as they helped him and his family keep him healthy as long as was possible.
Private services will be held at the convenience of the family. Friends are encouraged to sign the online guestbook at ehwfh.com. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Amyloidisis Research Consortium 320 Nevada Street, Suite 210, Newton MA 02460.
